Patterns In Nature exhibition in Gilbert Scott Gallery Leeds was the fruit of a six-year collaboration between two visual artists, Sharon Scott, the painter, and Krystyna Szulecka, the photographer. In this show they not only share exhibition space but also a vision in which the one provides inspiration for the other, resulting in unique canvases combining photography and painting. Lines that start in the photograph lead to the canvases, colours picked up by the camera and pigment spilled onto the surrounding borders of the fabric are matched with such accuracy that from the distance it is difficult to see the boundary between the two media. The photographs are not printed directly onto the canvas but on textured archival watercolour paper using pigments. The surface thus created blends well with the acrylic and oil paint. It also provides opportunities to explore the three-dimensional presentation of the work.
